wELCOME TO WARING CREEK FARM - Goat Division....

Why do you need a goat? Let us count the ways....

On the small scale farm, smaller livestock such as goats make a lot of sense and can also be a lot of fun! But just fair warning.....goats can also be addictive - you can't just have one...

On the sensible side, goats are easier to handle than cattle and have smaller appetites. There are many things on the fun side of the equation including their charming personality and the fact that there are so many types to choose from.

Goats will never try to hurt you; if frightened or scared they just try to get away. No kicking, biting or scratching. The picture to the left is showing the exception to this rule -- the rutting buck can be very, very crabby and want to rise up on his back legs and challenge you during the breeding season!

Goats are oddly very inquisative yet very timid, curious yet afraid. They are very social; it is all about the group --- where one goes, the others will follow. But that same mentality means you can easily walk them down a road following you shaking a bucket full of grain. Oh, did we mention -- they love to climb! On anything! Below is a group of our Boer kids doing what goats do best; being nosy and climbing.....

Your decision on what kind of goat you want will be decided by your purpose: milk, soap, meat, fiber or just for the fun of it.

Dairy breeds include the Alpine, Kinder, LaMancha, Nigerian Dwarf, Nubian, Oberhasli, Saanen, Sable and Toggenburg. Meat breeds include the Boer, Kiko, Pygmy, Spanish, San Clemente and Myotonic. Fiber goats are the Angora, Cashmere and Pygora (cross between Pygmy and Angora)

On Waring Creek Farm we raise Boer and Boer crosses. Some of our does are half Nubian or Saanen. Below is our Saanen doe Willie with her twin daughters.

The Nubian mothers often have kids that have some interesting colour. The Boer goats have the traditional white bodies with the brown/red heads. They can also have the pure red colouring, called Kalahari. In the photo on the left is Marge with her triplet sons; the middle one is a Kalahari.
